We, the Europe Generation

Everywhere we hear about the European Union, but always from the point of view of politicians or elderly professors. Well, this article aims to see the European Union through the eyes of those who were born in it: We, free from borders, patriots of a larger Homeland; We, the Europe Generation.

A quote as an example – “I would save the Union. […] I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views.” [Abraham Lincoln – letter to Hon. Horace Greeley, August 22, 1862]

We are the Europe Generation.
We are those who were born without borders and without walls. Even though we came into the world when they still existed, we were too small to remember them.
We are those who do not remember the Lira italiana, the Franc français or the Deutsche Mark or all other small coins or, if We have any memory, it is because we used them to buy candies when We scarcely knew how to count.
We are those who, when We visit: Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary, wonder why We need to fuss with currency converters, when boundaries are nothing more than white or gray lines, traced on satellite maps. We ask “why”, but unfortunately We know the answer, which is accurate, logical, clear: the Country We live in is called European Union, not the United Europe, nor the United States of Europe.

We have been born and raised with the idea of Unity and for this reason We are patriots of a greater Homeland. Sadly that same Homeland is now at the same stage as the USA at the time of the Civil War in 1861. And since History should act as a teacher and mentor, maybe the proper authorities should observe and study this History before we make the same mistakes as the United States of America made just over 150 years ago.
The European Union risks an unwarranted secession, due to the common fears proper of every individual State… since these fears are common, what sense is there in breaking up the union?
Let’s take, as a model, for certain senses, the United States of America, which together make up a single world power; why can’t we, of the old continent, be equal to them? Yes, it is true, the USA was facilitated in this by common traditions, and also it is true that the elderly struggle to fit with all that is new, but in the distant past we were a single, united power and We, who are the Europe Generation, demand that distant unity, because we already feel it. This does not mean denying the past and traditions of every single European State, to which the generations before Us are still strongly attached, but implementing them in an even larger picture.

We are European and multilingual, but the great Country We belong to is slipping into a wrong idea of itself and its potential.
We would like, in a not too distant future: to be able to vote for a single Unitary Parliament, which deals with the interests of the United Europe as a single State; to be able to serve and fight under a single Unitary Army, which marches under the blue and starred standard; to be guided and judged on the basis of a Unitary Constitution, to which the rights and laws of individual States or territories are subordinated. This is the United Europe to which We reach out. Neither for Peace nor Power, but to raise a cry to a United Europe in a hymn of Freedom.
